Does Porsche have a museum there too or is Mercedes the only manufacturer museum in Stuttgart?

In the couple times I've been to Stuttgart, Ive not made it up to Zuffenhausen to see the Porsche Museum. That being said, reviews aren't nearly as glowing as they are for Mercedes. Ill go next visit for sure.

When ever I make it to Germany I plan on visiting all the manufacturer museums as well as seeing Stuttgart and Munich. Maybe see some old WWII stuff as it's interesting.

We stayed in a little farm house hotel called Wald Hotel. Unbeknownst to me that night, Dieter Zetsche and the Damiler Board were meeting there that night. I was the only car in the parking lot that wasnt a brand new S63 AMG with a driver.

How is Stuttgart and more importantly how is the Autobahn?

The mercedes museum is much larger but they are close to one another. The autobahn is great.

crowded, and tons of speed cameras, but if you hit the right stretch, its perfect. German road rules are intense. Its illegal to run anything other than snows or all seasons between october and easter. If you are in any accident, you are presumed at fault if you aren't in compliance. Its also illegal to pass on the right. Or to run out of gas.

Why are there speed cameras if there's no speed limit? Or is it for trucks and people towing?

de-restricted portions are scattered around the country. Otherwise most of the autobahns have limits of 100kph or 120kph. (62-70mph)

I believe they have a museum there... at least a factory. Last time I was there I was 12 though. All I remember is taking a picture on the round a bout in front of the curved wall that says PORSCHE on the factory. Edit: found the factory location and the wall I was talking about... cool story me.

There are very few remaining stretches of the autobahn left without speed limits.

in the coming years, things may change and the derestricted areas will go away. i hope they don't, but there is a movement to get rid of them for sure.

Maybe I'll never expirience something I've always wanted to do. Legally go over 100 mph. Maybe doing it illegally is more exhilarating.

i hit 130 on my trip. Its impressive to see how stable the car is at those speeds. Funny how things work when they do what they are engineered to do.

Yeah, reading some wiki info that it's really only near populated areas that there is a speed limit and in some other cases. Other wise it's free to go balls to the wall, if there's no speed limits else where.

I remember cruising at 130 with cruise control on, and getting easily passed by a Bentley Conti-GT

^ This. Meilenwerk ( http://www.meilenwerk.com/ ) in Boblingen is absolutely amazing, and you never know what you might see there. On just about any given weekend during the summer you will find some type of special event occurring.
Also, E41 south of Rottweil is towards the Bodensee has some great unrestricted sections.

In and around Stuttgart the traffic is very bad. Getting caught in stau (traffic jam) is a almost a certainty during rush times, and construction also causes many delays. The only unrestricted zones on the Autobahn are in very rural areas, everywhere else they are speed limited. Heliochrome is right about the speed cameras, they are everywhere in and around Stuttgart - and most are calibrated at only a 3kph overage allowed - very strict.
Also, if you stay at the V8, the Mercedes Benz manufacturing facility is right around the corner in Sindelfingen and they offer free guided tours of the plant and you can see the cars being made.

You're lucky then. Almost every American I've known who has visited has gotten at least one ticket. Usually the rental car company gets the ticket and they then ends up charging their credit cards once they are back in the states!
Fortunately, I know where all the permanent ones are around where I live in Frankfurt, but the mobile ones are evil! But, the traffic is too bad here to even get to the speed limit most of the time, so no worry.
